MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State battled back from an early two-set deficit to force a fifth set, before falling to Southeastern Louisiana 3-2 (21-25,16-25,25-23,25-20,15-17) at the ISTAP Collegiate Cup II Friday night.
Alabama State (2-6) was led by
Ni'yesha Brown with 15 kills to pace three Lady Hornets in double figures.
Briana Dorsey finished the night with 14 kills, while
Payten Clark added 11 in the loss.
Justus Tuiolosega led Alabama State with 24 assists, while
Asha Daniels led the team with 16 digs.
Kori Kutsch finished with her first double-double of the season with 22 assists and 15 digs on the night, while
Brittany Brown added 10 digs.
Southeastern Louisiana (1-6) was paced by Elyssa Purcell with 15 kills, while Alli Capps added 11.
Stat of the Night
- Southeastern Louisiana and Alabama State combined for 115 kills, with the Lady Lions recording 58 to 57 for Alabama State.
- The Lady Hornets outhit Southeastern Louisiana .133 to .129 on the night, the first time Alabama State has dropped a match leading in attack percentage.
- Alabama State had three players with double-digit kills led by Ni'yesha Brown with 16.
- The Lady Hornets led the way with 13 total team blocks.
How It Happened
- Alabama State trailed the match after dropping the first two sets 25-21, 25-16; before storming back to win the third set 25-23.
- In the third set, the two teams were tied most of the way late in the set and the Lady Hornets just two points away from dropping the match.
- However, Alabama State scored the final two points of the set on back-to-back kills from Brittany Brown and Briana Dorsey to force a fourth set.
- In the fourth set, Alabama State ran out to a nine-point lead at 16-7 and held that lead until late in the set. After Southeastern Louisiana closed to within three at 23-20, the Lady Hornets closed out the set with a kill from Brown to force the deciding fifth set.
- In the fifth and final set, the two teams traded points until Southeastern Louisiana grabbed a match point at 14-13. From there, Alabama State fought off a match point to get a match point of their own before the match was decided after a long rally.
