Alabama State falls to Southern

Tatyana Calhoun has career night in loss

BATON ROUGE, La. | Tatyana Calhoun posted a career-high, but it wasn't enough as Southern overcame eight lead changes and nine ties to hand Alabama State a 66-58 loss on Saturday afternoon at the F.G. Clark Activity Center.

Calhoun led Alabama State (4-13, 2-4 SWAC) with a career-high 22 points, going 10-of-14 from the floor, She also grabbed nine rebounds, narrowly missing a double-double. Keimeshia Walker added 14 points, three assists and two steals; while Areleatha Gipson added seven points on 100 (3-of-3) percent shooting from the floor.

Southern (7-9, 6-1 SWAC) was able to close the gap after Alabama State pushed the lead to six the third quarter, and closed the third on a run to tie the game 47-all. The Jaguars opened the fourth quarter on a 13-2 run after a steal and lay-up by Briana Green and Alabama State could not get within eight the rest of the way. Each time they cut the lead, Southern had an answer and was able to pull away over the final four minutes for the win.

"I thought we started strong but down the stretch we started settling for outside shots opposed to attacking the basket," coach Freda Freeman-Jackson said. "We are young, I'm not making any excuses, but once they understand the nature of the game we should be fine."

Alabama State shot 39.7 (25-of-63) percent from the floor and 17.6 (3-of-17) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 35.7 (5-of-14) percent from the free throw line.

Green led Southern with 25 points and nine rebounds, while Alyric Scott added 13 points and nine rebounds off the bench. The Jaguars ended the night shooting 41.1 (23-of-56) percent from the floor. They also shot 29.4 (5-of-17) percent from beyond the arc and 62.5 (15-of-24) percent from the free throw line.

The Lady Hornets will remain on the road when they head to Mississippi to face Alcorn State on Monday night at 5:30 pm. The game can be heard on the Hornet Sports Network beginning at 5:15 pm with the pregame show.
