Reginald Gee pours in 27, Hornets fall to Prairie View A&M

Three players score in double figures for Alabama State in loss

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Reginald Gee led three players in double figures, but it wasn't enough as Alabama State fell to Prairie View A&M 86-80 in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action Saturday night.

"It is about effort," Alabama State head coach Lewis Jackson said. "They are a veteran ball club and they came in here and got after us early. We just have to understand, we have to play like we did at the end of the game, for the whole game. We played hard, but we have to do it the entire time. Prairie View came in here and shot the ball well, they couldn't miss; but I will say our guards played really hard tonight and I am proud of that."

Gee led all scorers with 27 points on 50 (7-of-14) percent shooting from the floor and knocked down 11-of-14 free throws on the night; missing his career high by one point. His career high came against Mississippi Valley State last January.

Tobi Ewuosho and Jacoby Ross each finished with 10 points in the loss for Alabama State (3-17, 3-5 SWAC), both coming off the bench. Ross played in his first game since the Southern contest a week ago after suffering a hand injury, finishing the night 4-of-7 from the floor.

Alabama State finished the night shooting 50 (29-of-58) percent from the floor, after shooting 62.1 (18-of-29) percent in the second half as they came back from a 17-point deficit. They also finished the night shooting 35.7 (5-of-14) percent from beyond the arc and 81 (17-of-21) percent from the free throw line.

Meanwhile, Zachary Hamilton led Prairie View A&M (7-14, 4-4 SWAC) with 21 points on seven three-pointers, five of which came in the first half. He paced five players in double figures as J.D. Wallace and Shaquille Preston added 15 each, while Troy Thompson had 13 and Dennis Jones 10.

Prairie View A&M finished the night shooting 57.4 (27-of-47) percent from the floor and 52.6 (10-of-19) percent from beyond the arc, while shooting 66.7 (22-of-33) percent from the free throw line.

Alabama State returns to action Monday night, hosting Texas Southern at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome with tip set for 7:30 pm. The game will be carried on the Hornet Sports Network.
