MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State fell to Texas Southern in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action 71-39 at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome Monday night.
Alabama State (5-15, 3-6 SWAC) stayed within six after the first quarter (18-12), but defensive pressure allowed Texas Southern to take a 33-15 halftime lead – a lead they would not relinquish. Texas Southern (12-8, 7-2 SWAC) outscored Alabama State 15-3 in the third quarter to take a 58-26 lead going into the fourth.
Shamyiah Smith and
Victoria Harvey led the Lady Hornets with six points each. Alabama State shot 31.3 (15-of-48) percent from the floor, and 8.3 (1-of-12) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 42.1 (8-of-19) percent from the free throw line.
Joyce Kennerson led the Tigers 26 points and three assists, while Kaitlyn Palmer chipped in 23 points and five rebounds in all forty minutes of action.
Texas Southern shot 41.5 (22-of-53) percent from the floor, and 36.8 (7-of-19) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 60.6 (20-of-33) percent from the free throw line. Texas Southern held a 39-34 rebounding advantage and forced Alabama State into 20 turnovers.
Alabama State returns to action Saturday when they face Mississippi Valley State on the road in Itta Bena (Miss.). Tip is set for 2:00 pm and will be carried on the Hornets Sports Network with pregame beginning at 1:45 pm.
