MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Tatyana Calhoun notched her seventh career double-double to help lead Alabama State to a 76-41 victory over Mississippi Valley State in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome Saturday night.
Calhoun led five Alabama State (3-12, 1-2 SWAC) with a career-high 17 points and a career-high 17 rebounds, while
Nia Sapp added a career high 12 points off the bench.
Kayla Stephens added 10 points, six rebounds and six assists in the victory.
Meanwhile,
Areleatha Gipson and
Amber Hunt each added 10 points in the victory for the Lady Hornets – both career highs.
Alabama State took charge in the first quarter after trading baskets, taking a 6-4 lead and never relinquishing that advantage. The Lady Hornets shot 66 (31-of-47) percent from the floor and 30.8 (4-of-13) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 58.8 (10-of-17) percent from the free throw line in the win.
Mississippi Valley State (0-13, 0-2 SWAC) connected on 30 (15-of-50) percent from the floor and 13.2 (2-of-15) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 39.1 (9-of-23) percent from the free throw line.
The Lady Hornets won the rebounding battle 38-28.
Alabama State returns home Monday afternoon against the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 4 pm. The game can be heard on the Hornet Sports Network beginning at 3:45 with the pregame show.
