Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lady Hornets win consecutive games, defeat UAPB Monday night

Amber Hunt and Keimeshia Walker each score 13 in win

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Hot shooting in the first half helped lift the Alabama State women's basketball team to a 63-54 victory over Arkansas Pine-Bluff in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) women's basketball action Monday afternoon at Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

Alabama State (4-11, 2-2 SWAC) won its second consecutive game at home, and was led in scoring by Amber Hunt and Keimeshia Walker with 13 points each – a new career high for Hunt. Kayla Stephens added 8 rebounds and five points in the win.

"We knew going in that Arkansas Pine-Bluff is really aggressive and wanted to pack the paint to make it difficult to get the ball to (Tatyana) Calhoun, so I thought our girls had a lot of patience moving the ball," Coach Freda Freeman-Jackson said.  "I thought it was a good win for us, and hopefully my girls understand what it takes to win in the SWAC because every team will be tough and ready to play."

The Lady Hornets built a 16-9 lead to start the second quarter behind 87.5 (7-of-8) percent shooting from the field and 75.0 (3-of-4) percent from beyond the arc. UAPB closed back within eight to cut the lead to 31-23 at halftime.

Alabama State shot 47.9 (23-of-48) percent from the floor and 58.3 (7-of-12) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 71.4 (10-of-14) percent from the free throw line in the win.

Malik Muhammed led Arkansas Pine-Bluff (3-10, 1-2 SWAC) with 10 points while the Lady Lions connected on 26.9 (14-of-52) percent from the floor and 15.8 (3-of-19) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 74.2 (23-of-31) percent from the free throw line.

Alabama State will remain at home and host rival, Alabama A&M, on Saturday at 3 pm. The game can be heard on the Hornet Sports Network beginning at 2:45 pm with the pregame show.
