Tuscaloosa, Ala. | Alabama State stood firm Wednesday night against Alabama before dropping a hard-fought match, 3-0 (14-25, 24-26, 25-9).
The Lady Hornets (10-16) kept the match close early in the first stanza behind a couple of
Taira Cottingham kills before Alabama (15-5) closed the opening set on a 14-4 run.
Despite falling behind 19-14 in the second set, freshman
Kaitlynn Stoker sparked a 9-3 run with two kills and the Lady Hornets grabbed their first lead of the match at 23-22. Another kill from the Allen, Texas native gave Alabama State set point before a couple of untimely errors allowed the Crimson Tide to capture the frame. Â
Krysta Medearis' eighth kill of the match knotted the score at six apiece in the final set, however the Lady Hornets ran out of gas and Alabama sprinted away with the final set.
Alabama State was outhit .274 - .069. The Lady Hornets were tremendous at times defensively, finishing with 33 digs to the Crimson Tide's 37. Stoker put away six attacks, the most in a match since August 25 while
Amber Bolden led the Lady Hornets with seven digs, a season-high.
Nastazia Heholt also had a career-night with 14 assists.
Alabama State will host Southern Miss next Tuesday, October 16, at Lockhart Gymnasium. First serve is at 7 pm.
