BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Alabama State faced a tough task on the road Sunday afternoon against first-place Howard and ultimately fell to the Bison 1-0 at Sicard Hollow Athletic Complex.
 
"It was a tough one today, but I felt like we were really never out of it," head coach Jodie Smith said. "They were able to capitalize on a set-piece midway in the first and made the lone goal stand up."
 
Alabama State (4-9, 4-3 SWAC) and Howard (8-6-1, 6-1-1 SWAC) traded chances to no avail in the first half before the Bison were able to get on the scoreboard in the 19th minute. Following a foul by the Lady Hornets, Jordan Taylor hit a strike from outside the 18-yard box and into the upper corner of the net.
 
The score remained 1-0 heading into halftime and the Alabama State defense remained strong against the Howard attack as the Lady Hornets looked for the equalizer coming out of intermission but couldn't connect despite nine shots on goal.
 
The Lady Hornets return home to the ASU Soccer Complex to face Arkansas Pine-Bluff on Friday at 7 pm. Admission is free to all home games.
