Montgomery, Ala. | Alabama State wraps up a brief stint in non-conference action with a match against Southern Miss Tuesday at 7 pm at Lockhart Gymnasium.
 
The Lady Hornets have won six of their previous eight matches and six-of-seven Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) tilts. Alabama State ranks first in the SWAC in opponent blocks at 1.54 per set. This metric signifies that the Lady Hornets are outperforming their peers at placing attacks past the initial front line of defenders.
 
Junior outside hitter Krysta Medearis has been steady all season and is third in the conference in total points (260.5) and fourth in total kills (223). In her last 10 matches, she has accounted for double-digit kills on eight occasions and is hitting at an impressive .204 clip.
 
Southern Miss enters Tuesday's match 10-10 overall and 4-3 in Conference USA. The Golden Eagles swept Louisiana Tech, 3-0, in their most recent match. Southern Miss and Alabama State have three common opponents (Alabama, South Alabama and Southern Miss). They fell by identical 3-0 scores to Alabama and South Alabama and were victorious over Alcorn State, 3-1. Southern Miss is led by Kylie Grandy's 337 total kills (4.38 kills per set), the second-highest clip in Conference USA. Grandy is also tops on the club in points (379.0) and service aces (27. 0). Sarah Bell orchestrates the offense with 821 assists (10.66 per set).  Madison Lawler (3.42 digs per set) and Bell (3.21) anchor the back end while Alexis Coombs and Catherine Reosher have recorded 80 and 70 blocks, respectively. Southern Miss leads holds a 4-0 advantage in the series.
