MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Alabama State volleyball team is set to compete in the second Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Roundup of 2018 this weekend with a five-game slate on the campus of Alabama A&M.
The Lady Hornets (10-17, 7-2 SWAC) found success at last month's Roundup in Baton Rouge, La., leaving the event with a 4-1 record, including a dramatic five-set thriller over Texas Southern. Senior setter
Kori Kutsch has been a steadying presence all season long for Alabama State, putting up 30 or more assists in 11 matches – the most in the SWAC -- including 38 in last Tuesday's 3-1 setback to Southern Miss. Following a seven-kill effort against the Golden Eagles, junior outside hitter
Bayle' Bennett is one kill shy of 800 for her career.
Alabama State opens the tournament with a doubleheader Friday against Southern (3:00 pm) and Grambling State (5:30). The Lady Hornets dispatched the Jaguars (3-5 SWAC) in their last matchup in three sets; however, they dropped a five-set heartbreaker to Grambling State (2-6).
Action continues Saturday with another doubleheader with matches versus Prairie View A&M (10:00 a.m.) and Arkansas-Pine Bluff (7:00 p.m.). The Lady Panthers and Lady Lions are 4-5 and 3-6, respectively, in the conference. The Lady Hornets finish out the weekend with a tilt against Texas Southern (10:00 a.m.) Sunday.
