HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | Alabama State put the finishing touches on a perfect swing through the SWAC Eastern Round-Up with a competitive four-set win over Texas Southern (34-32, 22-25, 26-24, 25-9).
Senior middle blocker Candace Martin posted a season-high in kills (16) and points (18.0), powering the Lady Hornets (15-17, 12-2 SWAC) to their fifth-straight victory. Junior Krysta Medearis put away 15-of-38 attacks (.289), notching the most kills in a match since the Memphis, Tenn. native had 16 in a tilt last month against Grambling. Kori Kutsch snagged her third double-double in five games, pairing 48 assists with 11 digs while junior Bayle' Bennett narrowly missed her fifth-consecutive double-digit kill match (nine kills, 10 digs).
The Lady Tigers (8-16, 5-6) stormed back from a 23-16 deficit in the opening frame, forcing extra play before Alabama State overcame four set points to claim the stanza following two Texas Southern errors. The match turned in the third set when the Lady Hornets fought off set point and used a 3-0 burst to close the match, capped off by a Taira Cottingham kill. Alabama State cruised in the final frame behind four kills and a block from Martin.
After playing five games in three days, the Lady Hornets will not return to action until a home match with Mississippi Valley State on October 28.
