MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Alabama State University women's soccer team ended the regular season on a high note with a 2-1 overtime victory over rival Alabama A&M on a rainy Thursday night at the ASU Soccer Complex.
"We didn't play our best tonight, but we still found a way to get the win," head coach
Jodie Smith said. "It was a great way to end the season and head into the tournament with a victory over A&M."
Alabama State (6-10, 6-4 SWAC) scored early on a goal by
Teaggan Ilela in the 35
th minute of action after
Kayla Tillman's strike bounced off the crossbar and Illela opportunistically connected off the deflection.
Alabama A&M (5-11-1, 5-4 SWAC) knotted the score in the 76th
minute when Valery Mastache gathered a loose ball at the top of the box and squared a shot that found its way past goalkeeper
Gianna Guyot to send the game to overtime.
It didn't take long for the Lady Hornets to end it as Tillman intercepted a pass from a Lady Bulldogs' defender one minute into the extra period and found
Birgit Rijnders for the game-clinching goal.
Alabama State will travel to Houston, Texas, as the fourth seed, for the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championships, hosted by Prairie View A&M, November 1-4.
