Lady Hornets host Jackson State Monday night

One of five regular-season home matches remaining

Montgomery, Ala. | Second place in the Southwestern Athletic Conference will be on the line Monday night when Alabama State welcomes Jackson State to Lockhart Gymnasium at 7 pm.

Aiming for their sixth win in seven tries, Monday night's match represents the last in conference action until 2018's final SWAC Roundup, October 19-21 in Huntsville, Ala. Alabama State (9-15,6-2 SWAC) has received ample production of late from the club's two primary setters -- senior Kori Kutsch and freshman Kayla Warren. Kutsch has been dynamic all season and leads the SWAC in total assists (665) and has ten matches with at least 30 helpers. She has been an asset in all aspects of the game, putting up six double-doubles while leading the team with 22 service aces. Warren has found her groove in conference play and had a career-high 10 assists against Alabama A&M last Thursday. In eight conference matches she has tallied at least five assists on five occasions. The Norcross, Ga. native is tied for fourth on the team with 11 service aces and has been one of the most reliable serves for Alabama State, committing only eight service errors for the season.

Head coach Penny Lucas-White – who recently notched win No. 150 at Alabama State – needs five more victories to join the 400 career-wins club.

Prior to Sunday's match with Alabama A&M, Jackson state enters the Monday night tilt with a record of 7-15, 5-1 in the SWAC. In their most recent outing, they were victorious over Alcorn State in a four-set affair. The Tigers lone loss in conference action came against Prairie View A&M at the SWAC Roundup, as Jackson State was swept in three sets. The Tigers are led by a quartet of hitters, including Camry Dabney (202 kills), Tielar Richards (194), Alexandra Burney (129) and Maria Bianchi Brito (131). The offense is run behind Sapphire Simpson (398 assists) and Priscilla Sanchez (233). Bianchi Brito and Kanile'a Nomura protect the net, as each has recorded 53 total blocks. Marayshia Masani has 240 digs (2.89 digs per set). Alabama State took all three matches against Jackson State in 2017 (3-1, 3-0, 3-1), including a first round takedown at the conference tournament.
