Johnson, Farrar lead @BamaStateMBB to home win

Duo record double-doubles in win over Birmingham Southern

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Brandon Johnson and AJ Farrar each recorded double-doubles for Alabama State as the Hornets ran away from Birmingham-Southern 86-44 in their non-conference home game of the season at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome Wednesday night.

Johnson finished the night with 11 points and 13 rebounds – including seven offensive boards – on the way to his first double-double of the season and his seventh of his career, while Farrar finished with 11 points and rebounds for his first career double-double.

Reginald Gee led Alabama State (2-2) with 18 points while hitting 60 (6-of-10) percent of his shots from the floor, while Tobi Ewuosho added 10 – including a trio of dunks in the second half for the Hornets. Three other players each finished with nine points including Jacoby Ross, Kevin Holston and Ed Jones. Both Ross (four assists and nine rebounds) and Holston combined for 10 assists in the contest.

With his point total Wednesday night, Gee went over the 800-point mark at Alabama State and currently stands at 814 total points through two-plus seasons for the Hornets.

Alabama State ended the night shooting 46.9 (30-of-64) percent from the floor and just 23.8 (5-of-21) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 61.8 (21-of-34) percent from the free throw line and grabbed 52 total rebounds – outrebounding Birmingham-Southern by 19. The Hornets finished with five blocks, giving them 23 for the year through four games, and forced 21 Panther turnovers.

Meanwhile, Birmingham-Southern shot just 24.6 (14-of-57) percent from the floor and 24.2 (8-of-33) percent from beyond the arc. They also finished at 61.5 (8-of-13) percent from the free throw line, and had just one player in double figures – Calvin Bak with 12 (all in the first half).

Birmingham-Southern (2-1) pulled to within four with 1:54 to play in the first half before Alabama State went on a 22-2 run over the next seven minutes to take a 54-30 lead with 14:54 left to play in the game. The Hornets were able to pull away and build a 36-point cushion late in the second half.

Alabama State returns to action next Wednesday on the road against Iowa. The game tips at 7:30 pm and can be seen on the Big10 Network.
