MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State hits the road for the final time this season Saturday when they face Prairie View A&M, with kick set for 1 pm in Texas.
Alabama State (3-6, 2-3 SWAC) enters the contest after dropping a contest at home to Jackson State last weekend, while Prairie View A&M (3-6, 2-3 SWAC) has dropped three consecutive contests – all in conference play. These two teams last met September 23 of last year, with Prairie View A&M shutting out the Hornets 34-0 at ASU Stadium – the only shutout of the Hornets last season.
The Hornets lead the all-time series, that dates back to 1931, 25-8 with one tie over the course of the series. Prairie View A&M won the first meeting (1931), before Alabama State reeled off six straight. The longest streak of the series belongs to Alabama State with 15 consecutive victories from 1989 through 2006. However, the current streak belongs to Prairie View A&M as the Panthers have won four consecutive contests including last season's shutout.
The two teams started off the conference season by beating both of the reigning division champions, with Alabama State knocking off Alcorn State and Prairie View A&M knocking off Grambling State. Since then, however, both teams have been hit with injuries and dropped key contests to fall short of the division crown.
The Hornets will turn to
Chris Scott under center this week after entering the contest in the second half last week against Jackson State. The freshman completed 8-of-25 passes for 78 yards after the Hornets were forced to go to the air down 17-0. Over the course of the season, the Hornets are led offensively by
Ezra Gray with 321 yards on the ground after playing sparingly since the South Alabama game. Meanwhile,
Wallace Corker leads the receiving corps with 18 receptions for 177 yards, while
Tyrek Allen has proven to be the big play threat with three touchdowns of 60-plus yards on the season.
On the defensive side of the ball,
Darron Johnson leads the team with 69 tackles that include nine before the junior left the game in the third quarter.
Kurron Ramsey has added 61, while
Joshua Hill has 47 and a pair of interceptions (including one for a touchdown).
Christian Clark has 46 total tackles, while
Dennis Roberts IV has 40 and a pair of interceptions.
As a team, the Hornets have recorded 10 sacks and 61 tackles for loss; while currently sitting among the nation's best in turnovers gained.
The game can be heard on the Hornet Sports Network, beginning with pregame at 12:30 pm.
