PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas | Alabama State fell 66-13 to Prairie View A&M in their final Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) road game of the season Saturday at Blackshear Field.
Chris Scott led Alabama State with 89 yards passing, hitting on 14-of-24 passes with a pair if interceptions. He hit eight different receivers with
Jeremiah Hixon and
Ezra Gray leading the way with three receptions each in the Hornets' loss. Meanwhile,
Tallesin Farmer led the Hornets with 57 yards on 15 carries, while
Ezra Gray added 55 yards on 14 carries.
Dontrey Manley finished with 47 yards on six carries.
Aaron Pope led the team with eight tackles, while
Joshua Hill added seven in the loss.
The Hornets scored on their first possession of the game, using eight plays to cover 65 yards in 2:36 to pull within a point at 7-6 with 10:11 to play in the third quarter. The subsequent extra point was blocked by Prairie View A&M off of the foot of Hunter Hansen.
Prairie View A&M (4-6, 3-3 SWAC) reeled off 49 consecutive points on seven straight possessions to take a 56-6 lead early in the fourth quarter. Alabama State was able to get back on the board on a one-yard touchdown run by
Chris Scott, the first of his career, to cap off a 16-play drive. The drive covered 74 yards and used 7:57 of the clock to end the Hornets' drought.
The Panthers scored on the first eight drives of the game until their final drive of the third quarter when Alabama State (3-7, 2-4 SWAC) stopped them on a fourth down play.
The point total for Prairie View A&M is the most given up by a Hornet defense since the team gave up 64 in a 64-6 loss to Southern in 2016. The Panthers were led offensively Jalen Morton who finished the day with 290 yards passing and 196 yards rushing on 12 carries. The redshirt junior accounted for 486 of the Panthers' yards and accounted for six touchdowns (four throwing and two rushing). Dawonya Tucker finished with 134 yards on 19 carries and a pair of touchdowns for Prairie View A&M.
Alabama State returns to action on a short week, hosting Mississippi Valley State in the Turkey Day Classic Thursday afternoon. The game kicks at 2 pm inside ASU Stadium, and can be heard on the Hornet Sports Network beginning with the pregame show at 1:30 pm.
