MONTGOMERY, ALA. | Alabama State aims to close out the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) regular season on a high note Monday night in Jackson, Miss. with a 7 pm match against Jackson State.

The Lady Hornets are hitting their stride as the regular season winds down and have won their last nine conference matches, securing the No. 2 overall seed for the SWAC tournament in Itta Bena, Miss., November 16-18.

Opponents are hitting .185 while only putting away 11.14 kills per set against the Lady Hornets, the second best mark in the league in each category. These figures can be attributed to a strong defensive presence with senior Candace Martin (105 blocks, first in the SWAC), junior Payten Clark (0.80 blocks per set, seventh in the SWAC) and senior libero Kayla Torres (3.22 digs per set, seventh in the SWAC) providing a formidable defensive trio.

Jackson State (11-22, 9-7) enters Monday night's match in third place in the conference despite dropping five consecutive matches. The Lady Tigers are led by Tielar Richards (300 kills, 2.42 per set, ninth in the SWAC) and Camry Dabney (296 kills, 2.39 per set). Maria Bianchi Brito is second in the conference with 104 blocks and Markayshia Masani is digging out 3.21 attacks per set, the eighth-highest mark in the SWAC.
