@BamaStateWBB comes up short at South Alabama

Trailed by as many as 22, Lady Hornets second half rally comes up short

Mobile, Ala. | Despite a double digit halftime deficit, Alabama State made a valiant effort late before falling to South Alabama 77-65 in nonconference action at the Mitchell Center Sunday afternoon.
 
Alabama State (1-6) trailed by 17 at the half, falling behind 40-23. The Lady Hornets opened the third quarter on an 11-1 run to ignite the offense and pulled within single digits with 4:03 left in the third quarter. On their next possession, Tatyana Calhoun connected on a fast break layup to pull the Lady Hornets to within four, 46-50. A couple of free throws by Shmya Ward narrowed the margin to two (48-50) to close the third quarter.
 
The Lady Hornets opened the fourth quarter on a Jayla Crawford layup to tie the game at 50-50 before South Alabama (8-0) answered back with a 7-1 run. A nine point deficit at the 3:36 mark ballooned to 12 as the Lady Hornets started to foul to extend the game, a deficit in which they could not recover.
 
Ayana Emmanuel led Alabama State with 16 points and five rebounds, while Crawford added 13. Ward added 10 points and six rebounds for Alabama State who shot 36.7 (18-for-49) percent from the floor and 27.3 (3-of-11) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 89.7 (26-of-29) percent from the free throw line.
 
Meanwhile, Lewis led South Alabama with 21 points, while Jayla Morrow added 16. Damaya Telemaque finished the day with 13 points and Savannah Jones had 12 points for the Jaguars, who shot 44.6 (25-of-56) percent from the floor, 46.7 (7-of-15) percent from beyond the arc and 60.6 (20-of-33) from the charity stripe.
 
Alabama State won the rebounding battle (38-33), second chance points (16-11) and fast break points (19-16).
 
The Lady Hornets returns to action Sunday afternoon at home against UAB, with tip set for 3 pm.
