MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State returns home Saturday afternoon beginning with Southern at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome, the first of two games in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) this weekend for the Lady Hornets.
Alabama State (7-16, 5-7 SWAC) enters the contest after defeating rival Alabama A&M, 55-44, on Saturday in which
Tatyana Calhoun led the Lady Hornets with 14 points while
Courtney Lee,
Areleatha Gipson, and
Victoria Harvey chipped in eight points each.
Calhoun leads Alabama State in scoring, and is tenth in that category, averaging 13.8 points per game. She also leads the conference in field goal percentages at 71.4 (65-for-91) percent for the season and leads her team with 6.5 rebounds per game.
Keimeshia Walker averages 8.4 points per game, while
Shamyiah Smith is fifth in the conference in assists, averaging 3.3 per contest. As a team, Alabama State is second in the conference in field goal percentage (.431).
Saturday's opponent, Southern University (12-10, 11-2 SWAC) is on a three-game winning streak after defeating Mississippi Valley, 66-58, in their last contest. Briana Green leads the Jaguars in scoring and rebounding at 16.3 points and 6.8 rebounds per game.
Meanwhile, Alcorn State (10-8, 5-2 SWAC), Monday night's opponent, is led by Tia Sanders at 15.7 points per game. Alcorn State is coming off a 76-58 win over Arkansas Pine-Bluff in which Alexus Freeman scored 22 points in the win.
The game against Southern tips at 3 pm and it will be carried on the Hornets Sports Network. Pregame on the Hornet Sports Network begins at 2:45 pm. The game on Monday against Alcorn State can be heard on the Hornets Sports Network, beginning at 5:15 pm.
