Late-inning heroics propel Alabama State to second consecutive victory

Hornets trailed until the seventh against New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, La. | One night after scoring most of the their runs in the final three innings, Alabama State used more late-inning heroics to overcome a deficit in day two of the Andre Dawson Classic and defeat New Orleans 6-3.

Alabama State (2-0) trailed much of the game until they were able to tie it up in the fourth inning on a Cage Cox sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-all. The game stayed that way until seventh when Alabama State out together a four-run inning to grab a big lead – all with two outs in the inning.

Gustavo Rios led off the inning with a nine-pitch walk, and with two outs advanced to second after a walk to Nate Gerard. He would come around to score on a wild pitch that give the Hornets the 2-1 lead and send pinch runner AJ Gardner to third. Gardner would score on a two-strike single by Joshua Dunson up the middle for the 3-1 lead. The Hornets would continue to add to the lead as Joseph Estrada singled through the right side to score Dunson, and Yamil Pagan finished off the inning with an RBI single for the 5-1.

After New Orleans trimmed the lead to 5-3 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth, Alabama State got an insurance run in the ninth on an RBI triple off the bat of Estrada.

Alabama State collected eight hits on the night, including a trio of players with two hits each in Estrada, Pagan and Dunson.

Darrius Wright (1-0) picked up the win in his collegiate debut, going six innings and allowing just one run off of three hits with four strikeouts. Chase Laney picked up his first save of the season working the final scoreless inning. Terrell McCall came out of the bullpen in his new role this season, and went two innings and allowed two runs – both unearned – off of three hits with three strikeouts.

Alabama State will send freshman Dalton Wilder to the mound for his collegiate debut against UAPB. First pitch is scheduled for 12 noon.
