Alabama State avenges earlier season loss

Lady Hornets return to action Monday night against Alcorn State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. |  Alabama State was able to overcome a fourth quarter deficit to the top team in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) in Southern, coming away with a 58-56 victory Saturday afternoon in Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

"Knocking off the number one team is definitely huge for us," Alabama State head coach Freda-Freeman Jackson said. "We tried to make a couple of different adjustments after losing at their place earlier this season and I think we made the necessary adjustments. I'm just proud of my girls and they should feel good about themselves."

Alabama State (8-16, 6-7 SWAC) controlled the majority of the game, as the two teams entered the fourth quarter tied at 47-all. Unlike the last contest in Baton Rouge, the Lady Hornets traded baskets with the Jaguars before a three-point basket by Kenya Pye put Alabama State up by three with 5:01 remaining.

Southern (12-10, 11-2 SWAC) stuck around during the final seconds after the Lady Hornets were unable to convert on late game free throws. Kayla Stephens was able to connect on 1-of-2 free throws to secure the win down the stretch.

Tatayana Calhoun led all scorers with 15 points and eight rebounds on 50 (6-of-12) percent shooting from the floor. Courtney Lee added 11 points and six rebounds off the bench, while Pye collected 10 points on 66.6 (2-of-3) percent from beyond the arc. Stephens narrowly missed a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds on 75 (6-of-8) percent shooting from the charity stripe.

The Lady Hornets finished the night shooting 42.9 (18-of-42) percent from the floor, 58.8 (20-of-34) percent from the free throw line and 25 (2-of-8) percent from beyond the arc, while winning the rebounding battle 54-36.

Briana Green led the Jaguars with 15 points, while Brian Thompson finished with 10.

Southern shot 35.5 (22-of-62) percent from the floor and 7.7 (1-of-13) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 45.8 (11-of-24) percent from the free throw line.
