BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | For the second consecutive night, Alabama State and UAB battled in a one-run contest; however, this time the Blazers were able to pull out a 2-1 victory over Alabama State at Regions Field Wednesday night.
Alabama State (3-2) scored first as they were able to get on the board in the top of the first inning.
Yamil Pagan reached on a one-out double, before advancing to third on a passed ball. He would later score on
Hunter Allen single to right for the 1-0 lead for Alabama State.
The Blazers would come back and answer in bottom of the second after a Zack Davis leadoff double, he would come around to score on an Antonio Ralat single to tie the game at 1-all. UAB (4-1) took the lead in the sixth after Davis led off the inning with a single and scored on a double play turned by the Hornets off the bat of Thomas Johns.
Gage Dollar (0-1) suffered the loss in his collegiate debut, going 5.0-plus innings and allowed two runs – both earned – off of four hits, with a pair of strikeouts.
Britt Buckelew came on in relief and three scoreless innings, allowing four hits.
Alabama State was held to four hits by four UAB pitchers, with Sylvester Toe (1-0) picking up the win with 2.2 innings of relief. Ty Harris picked up his first save of the season for the Blazers.
The Hornets return to action Friday night at the Wheeler-Watkins Complex, opening a four-game set with Southern with first pitch scheduled for 6 pm.
