Hornets can’t overcome late first half surge by Texas Southern, fall on the road

Alabama State returns home for final two games of regular season

HOUSTON, Texas | Reginald Gee led three Alabama State players in double figures as the Hornets dropped a 95-77 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) contest to Texas Southern on the road Monday night.
 
Gee finished with a team-high 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor, while Jacoby Ross added 16 points. Branden Johnson finished with 12 points and five rebounds in the loss.
 
Alabama State (7-21, 7-9 SWAC) and Texas Southern traded baskets for the majority of the first half until the Hornets pulled to within 23-20 with 7:20 to play in the half. Texas Southern answered with a 12-3 to push the lead to 35-23 with 3:58 to play in the half. The Hornets were able to get it down to eight with 1:32 to play in the half at 37-29, before Texas Southern closed the half on a 7-0 run for a 17-point halftime lead.
 
Texas Southern kept the momentum in the second half as Demontrae Jefferson and Derrick Bruce knocked down three-pointers to push the lead to 20. The Hornets continued to fight to get back into the contest, but couldn't get it any closer than 17 in the final 20 minutes.
 
Derrick Bruce led Texas Southern (10-19, 10-6 SWAC) with 37 points, while Demontrae Jefferson added 34 for the Tigers who shot 49.2 (32-of-56) percent from the floor. They also shot 41.9 (13-of-31) percent from beyond the arc and 75 (18-of-24) percent from the free throw line.
 
Alabama State shot 417 (30-of-72) percent from the floor and 42.1 (8-of-19) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 60 (9-of-15) percent from the free throw line.
 
Alabama State returns to action Thursday night at home against Jackson State at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome. The game tips at 7:30 pm and will be carried by the Hornet Sports Network, and will be part of #TBT 90s Day. Patrons coming to the game will be admitted free of charge with the donation of two canned goods.
