MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Branden Johnson finished with a career-high six blocked shots Thursday night against Jackson State, but none bigger than his final block in 62-60 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) victory over the Tigers at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome Thursday night.
After Tobi Ewuohso converted on one of two free throws with seven seconds remaining in the game, Jackson State rushed down the court with a chance to tie the game. Jeremiah Bozeman found his way to the basket and attempted to tie the game, however, Johnson came from behind to block the shot as the buzzer went off to preserve the victory for the Hornets.
Alabama State (8-21, 8-9 SWAC) used a team-high 17 points from
Reginald Gee including a three-pointer that tied the game up at 58-all with three minutes remaining, after the Hornets found themselves down by seven late in the contest.
Rodney Simeon added 13 off the bench, including a pair of big first half three-pointers that helped Alabama State take a one-point lead at the break.
Terrance LeFlore added nine points and four assists, while
Gene Davis added seven points and three assists – both playing in place of
Jacoby Ross who missed the game due to injury.
Alabama State finished the night shooting 42.6 (20-of-47) percent from the floor and 37.5 (6-of-16) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 64 (16-of-25) percent from the free throw line.
Maurice Rivers led Jackson State (11-18, 9-8 SWAC) with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Jordan Berry added 11 off the bench on three three-pointers. Lemmie Howard also added 10 off the bench for the Tigers.
Jackson State finished the night shooting 31.4 (22-of-70) percent from the floor and 31.3 (10-of-32) from beyond the arc. They also shot 75 (6-of-8) percent from the free throw line, while being outrebounded by the Hornets 41-38.
Alabama State returns to action Saturday evening at 5 pm against Grambling State on Senior Day. The game will be carried on the Hornet Sports Network with pregame beginning 15 minutes prior to the game.
