Lady Hornets fall late to UAPB in key SWAC contest

Tatyana Calhoun leads the way for Alabama State in loss

PINE BLUFF, Ark. | In a game that had six lead changes and nine ties, Alabama State gave up the lead late and had two opportunities to take the lead in the final seconds before falling 55-53 to Arkansas-Pine Bluff in a key Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) contest Monday night.
 
Tatyana Calhoun led the way for Alabama State (6-16, 4-7 SWAC) with 18 points on 80 (8-of-10) percent shooting from the floor. Arleatha Gipson scored a career-high 13 points, while Kenya Pye added nine points and Shamyiah Smith dished out six assists.
 
UAPB (5-16, 3-8 SWAC) held a 28-27 lead going into the second half, but a three-pointer by Gipson gave the Lady Hornets a 34-30 advantage halfway through the third. The teams traded baskets in the fourth, until Alabama State went on an 8-3 run to tie the contest at 48-all with just five minutes to play.
 
The Lady Hornets grabbed a 53-52 lead in one of two free throws by Gipson, before missing a three-pointer with 26 seconds remaining that allowed UAPB to have a chance to take the lead in the final seconds.

For the contest, Alabama State shot 40.0 (22-of-55) percent from the floor, and 21.1 (3-of-13) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 60.0 (6-of-10) percent from the free throw line. Shawntayla Harris gave UAPB a 54-53 lead on a lay-up with 13 seconds remaining, before the Lady Hornets missed shot in the final seconds that was rebounded by UAPB who sealed the game at the free throw line with one second remaining.
 
Destiny Brewton and Kye Richardson led the Lady Lions 11 points each, while Harris added 10 points and eight rebounds.
 
UAPB shot 33.3 (19-of-57) percent from the floor, and 27.8 (5-of-18) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 50.0 (12-of-24) percent from the free throw line.
 
Alabama State will return to action Saturday when they face Alabama A&M. Tip is set for 3:00 pm and will be carried on the Hornets Sports Network with pregame beginning at 2:45 pm.
