Hornets fall to Troy, gear up for conference series at home

Alabama State can’t overcome big innings by the Trojans

TROY, Ala. | Alabama State was unable to overcome five early runs by Troy, falling 14-1 at Riddle-Pace Field in non-conference action Tuesday night.

Playing for the first time in a week due to having an off weekend in conference play, Alabama State (12-11) fell behind quickly in the first two innings as Troy was able to put five runs on the board (including three in the second) off of five hits. The Trojans were able to get to Alabama State starter Channing Walker (0-1) in the first inning when Drew Frederic drove in Matt Sanders who reached on a leadoff walk, before adding another on an RBI single by Rigsby Mosley.

The Trojans added three more in the second – all charged to Walker – before Ivanniel Vazquez made an appearance out of the bullpen. The senior worked 4.2 innings out of the pen and allowed six runs off of 13 hits as he fought to keep the Trojans at bay.

Alabama State was unable to fight off five consecutive innings in which the Trojans scored a run – including five in the bottom of the seventh for the final margin.

Ray Hernandez picked up the lone RBI for the Hornets, driving in Cristopher DeGuzman in the top of the third inning to trim the lead to 5-1 at the time. Chris Lewis, Yamil Pagan and Joseph Estrada picked up the three Alabama State hits off of four Troy (17-8) pitchers.

Alabama State returns to action Thursday in the beginning of a three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) series against Mississippi Valley State. First pitch Thursday is scheduled for 6 pm, and admission is free to all home game.
