Lady Hornets fall to Mississippi State

Alabama State returns to action Friday at home in conference play

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State dropped their second contest to a member of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) in a week, falling to 23rd-ranked Mississippi State 11-0 at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex Tuesday night.

The Bulldogs came out quick, scoring seven runs in the first inning to take a commanding lead before Alabama State could get a hit on the board. Casey Durham got the first of two Alabama State (11-22) hits in the third.

Charlene Castro and Makala Burt reached in the sixth, with Castro reaching on an infield error and Burt on the second hit of the inning for the Lady Hornets. Alabama State was able to get six runners on base against Mississippi State, as all six were stranded.

Justine Jean (5-7) suffered the loss for the Lady Hornets, working 6.1 innings and allowed 11 runs off of eight hits. Castro came on in the final inning and recorded the final two outs of scoreless relief.

Alabama State wore teal ribbons and teal socks in honor of Mississippi State freshman outfielder Alex Wilcox. The freshman from Brantley (Ala.) is battling ovarian cancer and the motto for the Bulldogs this season is "No one fights alone" in honor of Wilcox. The Bulldogs donned teal uniforms for the contest.

The Lady Hornets return to action this weekend in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play at home against Mississippi Valley State. The three game series begins with a single game at 6 pm Friday, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.
