MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State used a big sixth inning to power past Mississippi Valley State 10-5 Friday night in game one of their Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) series at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.
Alabama State (12-22, 4-3 SWAC) used an RBI groundout by
Charlene Castro to score
Kaylee Davis to take the lead in the fifth inning, before
Aimee Felices singled to left in the sixth inning to score
Amira James for a 6-4 lead, before
Vanessa Bradford blasted a two-run home run to put the game out of reach at 8-4.
The Lady Hornets added a pair of runs on a bases loaded walk to Castro and a sacrifice fly by
Hailey Walker to push the lead to 10-4. Alabama State would give up one run in the seventh to Mississippi Valley State for the final margin.
The Devilettes scored three runs in the first inning, before Alabama State scored three in the second on a Hatty Shope single and a two-run double from Felices. The Devilettes added a lone run in the fifth before the big inning for Alabama State.
Davis finished the night for Alabama State with three hits, while Felicies added a pair.
Justine Jean picked up the win with a complete game effort, allowing five runs off of six hits with four strikeouts.
The two teams will meet in a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex, with first pitch set for 1 pm. Admission is free to all home softball games.
