MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State took advantage of six Alcorn State miscues in the field to win their second consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) game, 6-1 at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex Saturday night.
Alabama State (7-4, 2-0 SWAC) scored three runs runs in the third and added another two in the sixth for the final margin. After Alcorn State jumped out to a 1-0 lead through two innings, the Hornets jumped on the board in third when Joesph Estrada singled through the left side to score
Noel Cheneau with the Hornets' first run to tie the game at 1-all. They would add two more when
Hunter Allen doubled to left to drive in two more for a 3-1 Alabama State lead.
The Hornets added another run in the fifth Allen singled to short to drive home Estrada before advancing on a throwing error by the shortstop.
Leading 4-1 heading to the sixth inning, the Hornets put the game away when
Cage Cox singled to right field and advanced got second on a Braves' error. The hit drove in Cheneau and Estrada for the final two runs.
Darius Wright (3-0) picked up the win, working six innings and allowed just one run – unearned – off of four hits. He walked four and struck out four.
Terrell McCall came on to work the final three innings, allowed just one hit.
Four Hornets picked up multiple hits in the contest, with Cheneau finishing 2-for-5 with a stolen base; while Cox also finished 2-for-5 with an RBI. Estrada went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI, while Allen went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in.
The series concludes with a single game on Sunday beginning at 1 pm at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex. Alabama State will send
Gage Dollar (0-1, 4.50 ERA) to the mound in the finale.
