Lady Hornets fall to Texas Southern in quarterfinals

Kayla Stephens and Shamyiah Smith end their career at tournament

HOUSTON, Texas | Seventh-seeded Alabama State had their season come to an and as they fell 70-42 at number second-seeded Texas Southern Tuesday night inside the H&PE Arena, in the quarterfinals of the SWAC Toyota Basketball Tournament.

Kenya Pye led Alabama State (8-22, 6-12 SWAC) with 11 points on 50 (4-of-8) percent shooting from the field including 2-of-3 from the charity stripe. Courtney Lee added nine points, while Victoria Harvey chipped in eight points and nine rebounds. Kayla Stephens also contributed nine rebounds, three blocks and two assists.

Texas Southern's (19-11, 13-5 SWAC) Joyce Kennerson led all players with 27 points on 8-of-16 shooting. She was joined in double figures by Kaitlyn Palmer with 10 points. The Tigers shot 44.7 (21-of-47) percent from the floor and 25 (2-of-8) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 61.9 (26-of-42) percent from the free throw line and earned a 34-18 points in the paint edge over the Lady Hornets.

The Lady Hornets played a strong first 20 minutes against the Tigers, shooting 28.6 (8-of-28) percent from the field to look up at a 23-19 deficit at the halftime break as Alabama State's bench outscored Texas Southern 17-7.

The Tigers got hot in the second half, outscoring the Lady Hornets 47-23 throughout the fourth quarter to take a comfortable 44-35 advantage into the final 10 minutes. Texas Southern would extend its lead multiple occasions throughout the fourth quarter before the game arrived at its final margin.

With the loss, the careers of Stephens and Shamyiah Smith came to end after helping lead Alabama State to a pair of conference championships and NCAA Tournament bids.
