LORMAN, Miss.| Alabama State split a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) doubleheader against Alcorn State Friday afternoon, earning a 4-1 victory in the opener before closing the day falling 2-1.
Game 1: Alabama State 4, Alcorn State 1
With Alcorn State's first hit of the game, Amari Ramsey connected a triple before scoring on a passed ball, for the Lady Braves' only run of the game.
Jordan Amerson recorded the first hit of the game for the Lady Hornets in the sixth on a single to left field. Back-to-back bunt singles from
Casey Durham and
Kaylee Davis made loaded the bases.
Kristin Gunter doubled to center to score a pair, before pinch Hitter
Charlene Castro singled to right center field for two more runs and the final margin.
Justine Jean (7-8) picked up the win with a complete game effort allowing one run off six hits and seven strikeouts.
Game 2: Alcorn State 2, Alabama State 1
Alcorn State got on the board in the second when
as Mariah Ortiz stole home for a 1-0 lead.
The two teams battled from that point until Alabama State's
Amira James advanced home on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-all.
Alcorn State was able to win the game in the bottom of the seventh inning after the game stayed tied on an RBI double from Ashley Arnold.
Skyler Sullivan (4-9) suffered the loss after working 6.1 innings and allowing a pair of runs on four hits, while striking out three.
The third and final is set for Saturday at 1pm.
