NEW ORLEANS, La. | Alabama State begins defense of its 2017 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championship Saturday afternoon in the conference tournament against Jackson State.
The two were scheduled to meet Saturday morning at the City Park/Pepsi Tennis Center, however, the matches have been moved to the indoor courts at the Hilton Riverside Tennis Courts. The match will begin at 12 noon.
Alabama State, who finished undefeated in regular season play, had a first round bye; while Jackson State – the fourth seed – defeated Grambling State, 4-0 on the opening day of the tournament. The Lady Hornets defeated Jackson State 4-1 earlier in the season after dropping the doubles point. Alabama State won four of six singles in action, and were trailing at numbers one and two when the match was called.
The two teams met last season in the championship match of the tournament, with the Lady Hornets winning and earning the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. On the bottom half of the bracket, second-seeded Prairie View A&M will face Alcorn State in the other semifinal
The championship match is set for 9 am on Sunday at City Park/Pepsi Tennis Center in New Orleans. The winner of the match receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tennis Championships.
