Alabama State completes sweep with run-rule victory

Hornets pound out 10 extra base hits in Sunday win

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State pounded out a season-high in hits as they completed the sweep of Alabama A&M at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex with a 15-5 victory in eight innings Sunday afternoon.

Alabama State (20-15, 14-4 SWAC) pounded out 22 hits in the victory, including 10 extra base hits in the win. Over the weekend, the Hornets scored 39 runs in the three-game sweep. Prior to the contest, Alabama State recognized their six senior student-athletes playing their last home weekend game of the season in Ray Hernandez, Joseph Estrada, Ivanniel Vazquez, Chase Laney, Hunter Allen and Gustavo Rios.

And the senior class responded as the four hitters collected nine hits, scored six runs and knocked in six runs. Not to mention, Laney came out of the bullpen to work three innings and pick up another save for Alabama State this season as he allowed just two hits on the day.

Alabama State scored a pair of runs in the first, added four more in the third before ending the game with five in the sixth, and eight in eighth.

Estrada finished the day 4-for-6 with a pair of runs scored and a pair of runs batted in, while connecting for a pair of doubles – his fifth and sixth on the season. Rios finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and a pair of runs batted in, while hitting his third home run of the season – a shot over the left center fence that pushed the game to the brink of ending early.

Santiago Garcia came in for Hunter Allen as a pinch hitter and finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI and his fourth double of the season, while Noel Cheneau finished 3-for-5 with a pair for runs batted in and a run scored – while connecting on his second triple of the season. Hernandez finished with a pair of hits and runs batted in with his sixth double of the season, while Cristopher DeGuzman finished 2-for-2 with his second double – while narrowly missing his first home run of his career as the ball hit the top of the right field fence.

Yamil Pagan finished with a pair of hits including his fifth double, while Cage Cox finished with a pair of hits including his fourth double and third triple.

Gage Dollar (4-2) picked up the win, working 5.0 innings and allowing five runs off of nine hits.

Alabama State returns to action Tuesday night against Jacksonville State in Oxford (Ala.) at Choccolocco Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6 pm, and the game can be heard on the Hornet Sports Network.
