NEW ORLEANS, La. | Top-seeded Alabama State captured their second consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) title Sunday, defeating Alcorn State 4-0 at the City Park Tennis Center.
Alabama State (12-8) capped off an undefeated run through conference play en route to their fourth conference championship in program history (1995, 1999, 2017 and 2018).
In doubles action,
Gabriela Lackova and
Lea Krajcovicova won 6-0 at the number two position to finish a combined 4-0 in conference tournament play in both singles and doubles. The duo also finished the year 15-2 against conference opponents in both singles and doubles.
The Lady Hornets secured the doubles point with a 6-2 victory by
Mirna Curcic and
Marija Blazevic over Alcorn State's Marlene Maier and Klavdija Bukovec at number three. Lackova pushed the overall lead to 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Alessanda Maganuco at number three single; while Krajcovicova won at number four 6-1, 6-1 over Klavdija Bukovec.
Reka Szentes clinched the championship at number two singles by defeating Ammaarah Tim 6-2, 6-1. Alcorn State (8-15) did not take a set, but the Lady Braves junior No. 1 player Bianca Birkenstock had pushed
Chloe Kabamba to a 6-6 tie-breaker and did not finish.
Lackova was named the SWAC Tournament's Most Valuable Player as well to the All-Tournament Team after winning both her singles and doubles matches in the semifinals and the championship from the number three singles spot and from the number two doubles position.
Krajcovicova also went 4-0 from the number four singles position and the number two doubles position. Curcic claimed three victories in the tournament including one as a doubles partner in the number three match of the championship with
Marija Blazevic. Blazevic also made the team after earning two victories in the tourney.
The Coach of the Year award went to Alabama State head coach
Anuk Christiansz for a second straight season. The Lady Hornets went 8-0 in conference play to earn the top seed and a first round bye in the playoffs, before winning the conference tournament.
Alabama State will now await its opponent in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, as the Selection Show airs May 1 on NCAA.com
