MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State dropped their second non-conference game of the season to Troy Wednesday night, 10-2, at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.
Troy (25-12) jumped on Alabama State starter
Ivanniel Vazquez (1-5) for four runs in the top half of the first inning, using five hits to take the early lead. Alabama State was able to come back and put a run on the board after
Joseph Estrada led off the inning with a 10-pitch leadoff walk. He was pushed to third on a single by
Cage Cox before scoring on a
Ray Hernandez sacrifice fly to trim the deficit to 4-1.
Alabama State (20-17) trimmed the deficit to 4-2 on a double by
Hunter Phillips to score Cox in the bottom half of the fourth inning. The Trojans pushed the lead to 6-2 with a pair of runs in the top half of the fifth inning on a two-run home run by Rigsby Mosley, who added an RBI double in the seventh. The Trojans added three more in the ninth for the margin.
Vazquez lasted six innings in the start, giving up six runs (all earned) on eight hits, while striking out three. He was one of three pitchers used for Alabama State on the night as
Chase Laney went 2.2 innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on a pair of hits, while
Terrell McCall came in to record the final out of the ninth.
Hernandez led Alabama State at the plate, going 3-for-3 with an RBI, while Phillips went 2-for-3. Meanwhile, Cox finished the night 2-for-5 in the loss against the Trojans who used four different pitchers.
Alabama State returns to action Friday for the first of a three game series against Jackson State on the road, with first pitch scheduled for 6 pm. The game will be carried on the Hornet Sports Network.
