Hornets score a pair to late to beat Prairie View A&M

Hunter Phillips and Cristopher DeGuzman picked up RBI hits in win

NEW ORLEANS, La. | Hunter Phillips and Cristopher DeGuzman drove in a pair of runs in the eighth inning to lead Alabama State to a 4-2 victory over Prairie View A&M in an elimination game at the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament Saturday morning.

Phillips picked up a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the eighth inning Friday afternoon before storms pushed the game to Saturday morning with the Hornets leading 3-2. After working the count full Saturday morning, DeGuzman punched a ball past Prairie View A&M shortstop Andrew Garcia to score Phillips from second for the final margin.

Terrell McCall (2-2), one of four pitchers used in the contest, worked 2.1 innings and allowed just two hits in picking up the win. Meanwhile, Gage Dollar and Britt Buckelew came out of the bullpen to work a combined 3.2 innings and allowed three hits, while Buckelew struck out a pair in relief of starter Ivanniel Vazquez.

Alabama State (29-21) jumped on top in the first inning with an RBI single from Gustavo Rios, before Prairie View A&M took a 2-1 lead third. The game stayed that way until Ray Hernandez picked up one of his two hits on the day, a solo blast to left to tie the game at 2-all.

Phillips also picked up a pair of hits in the win.

Alabama State returns to action later today, facing Grambling State (25-24) at 1 pm at Wesley Barrow Stadium. The Hornets must beat Grambling State to force the "if" game, and the contest can be heard on the Hornet Sports Network 15 minutes prior to first pitch with the pregame show.
