Montgomery, Ala. | Alabama State continues its trek through the non-conference schedule with a return trip to Atlanta for the Hyatt Regency Invitational August 30-31, hosted by Georgia Tech.
The Lady Hornets (3-1) open play with a 12 pm match Thursday versus the host Yellow Jackets. In three previous matchups Alabama State has escaped victoriously, with the last contest occurring on October 30, 1982. Georgia Tech (4-0) is led by Mikalia Down (50 kills).
The Lady Hornets will play a doubleheader Friday -- Tulane (9:30 am) and Wofford (2 pm). Friday's opener marks the first meeting between the two programs. The Green Wave boasts six players with at least 13 kills. Meanwhile, the Terriers enter the Invitational with an overall record of 1-2. In the lone meeting between the two schools on September 3, 2011, Wofford defeated the Lady Hornets 3-0. Colleen Reilly (27 kills) and Catie Cronister (26 kills) leads the offense, while Taylor Gill (76 digs) and Reilly (12 total blocks) pace the defense.
Through four matches,
Bayle' Bennett leads Alabama State with 56 kills while
Kori Kutsch has 146 assists. The Lady Hornets also find themselves at the top of a few national statistical rankings, as the 215 total team attacks in the match versus North Carolina Central ranks third nationally, while the 68 team assists (including 60 by Kutsch) places them in a tie for third.
In addition to the aforementioned teams, South Alabama will also be participating in the event.
