Mobile, Ala. | South Alabama used a flurry of runs in all three sets to break away from Alabama State Tuesday night at Jaguar Gym, taking down the Lady Hornets 3-0 (15-25, 15-25, 11-25).
Alabama State (3-9) was able to muster just three leads in the match, with two taking place in the final set as a total of 14 Lady Hornets saw action. Alabama State was within striking distance in the middle frame, trailing 10-12, but a 7-0 run by the Jaguars (5-5) widened the gap and a 14-1 run in the final stanza provided South Alabama with a cushion that proved too large to overcome.
Krysta Medearis put away eight attacks to lead the offense and additionally tied for the team lead with five digs.
Candace Martin connected on four of her nine attacks while setter
Kori Kutsch dished out 17 assists. The Lady Hornets had four service aces, including two by freshman
Morgan Freeman.
South Alabama hit .537 for the match and Hannah Harris was a near perfect .929 (13-14) in attacks.
Alabama State resumes play this Friday against UCF at the VolleyKnights Invitational.
