BATON ROUGE, La. | The two-time defending Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) champion Alabama State soccer team was in good form on the road Friday night, defeating Southern 2-0 to open the 2018 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) season.
"It was a great win to open SWAC play, and I am pleased with the way we controlled the game," Alabama State head coach Jodie Smith said. "Gianna Guyot was great in goal along with the back line keeping a clean sheet with the shutout."
Alabama State (1-6, 1-0 SWAC) scored first when Ashley Thomas recorded her first goal of the season off a shot from the corner that Teaggan Ilela assisted. The lead was extended in the second half when Birgit Rijnders scored off an assist from Meaghan Fielding.
The win ended a seven-match winless streak that extended back to the last match of the 2017 season in the NCAA Tournament, and extended their unbeaten streak against conference opponents to eight dating back to last season.
Alabama State returns to action Sunday at 1 pm with a match at Jackson State, ending their two-match swing in conference play.
