Baton Rouge, La. | Alabama State (5-14, 2-1 SWAC) swept host Southern 25-20, 25-23, 25-20 Saturday morning in a hotly contested match at Seymour Gymnasium.

The Lady Hornets were in cruise control late in the second set with a 19-12 advantage before an 11-3 run from the Jaguars closed the gap. Junior Payten Clark and freshman Taryn King blocked a Southern (2-10, 1-2) attack for the 24th point and a Jaguar's attack error secured the final point for Alabama State, swinging the pendulum for the match in the Lady Hornets' favor.

"Although we have veterans on the court, we still have to find a way to win. We don't have a terminator just yet, we are finding out who the terminator is and we are still figuring out our roles," Alabama State head coach Penny Lucas-White said. 

Southern battled once again in the third set, trimming a four point Alabama State advantage to one (18-17) before an opportune timeout from Lucas-White propelled the Lady Hornets on a 7-3 run to close out the match. For the third time this weekend, freshman Cheyenne Rocker punctuated the ending to a frame with a kill, this win occurring in the final set. The Fayette, Ga. native led the Lady Hornets with 11 kills while fellow classmate Taryn King tallied nine kills and a game-high five blocks.

"They (Rocker and King) have done an excellent job and I am very, very pleased with the contributions we are getting from them," Lucas-White said

Senior Kori Kutsch shined once again with a 33-assist, eight dig effort and has 110 total helpers in her last three outings.

The Lady Hornets square off against Texas Southern tonight at 7 pm in their final match of the day.
