Baton Rouge, La. | Alabama State put an exclamation mark on a successful weekend at the Southwestern Athletic Conference West Volleyball RoundUp by dispatching Arkansas-Pine Bluff in three sets (25-15, 25-23, 25-20).
The Lady Hornets (7-14, 4-1 SWAC) controlled the match from the outset, jumping to an early 10-7 lead off a
Cheyenne Rocker kill and forcing a Lady Lions' (3-13, 1-4) timeout. Bayle Bennett had her best frame of the weekend with five kills and hit an efficient .345.
Alabama State had to earn the second stanza despite hitting a blistering .467, as junior
Payten Clark capped the set with one of her seven kills, a season-high.
Freshman
Kayla Warren ignited an early run in the final frame with an ace and an assist as Alabama State jumped out to a 7-5 lead. However, the Lady Hornets would relinquish their advantage (13-14), forcing an ASU timeout.
Alexandria Sarathy sparked a 7-2 run out of the break to extend the lead and a
Kayla Torres service ace ended the match.
Bennett hammered down 14 of 26 attacks, leading the Lady Hornets with a season-high .462 hit rate. Her 16 points in the match were the highest for the Chicago, Ill. native since putting up 18.5 against Gardner-Webb on August 25th.
Kayla Torres anchored the back-end with 15 digs and senior
Kori Kutsch posted 29 assists and three service aces.
The Lady Hornets return to the court next Sunday at 7 p.m. with a match at Mississippi Valley State.
