Montgomery, Ala. | For the third consecutive weekend Alabama State will participate in a road tournament, this time out west as the Lady Hornets visit Greeley, Colo. for the Hampton Inn and Suites UNC Classic, hosted by Northern Colorado.
Alabama State opens tournament play with a doubleheader Friday with matches against Pacific (10 am) and San Jose State (5 pm). A tilt versus Northern Colorado Saturday at 12 pm marks the final game of the weekend for the Lady Hornets.
Alabama State is led by a trio of junior outside hitters –
Bayle' Bennett (68 kills),
Krysta Medearis (81 kills) and
Taira Cottingham (35 kills). Cottingham has been Alabama State's top points' scorer in two of the past three contests. Senior
Kori Kutsch orchestrates the offense and has amassed 236 assists in eight matches this season, bringing her career total to 2,284.
Pacific (3-3) is paced by sophomore Kaitlyn Lines with 99 total kills and 3.96 kills per set. Freshman Riley Patterson, who has amassed 90 kills (15 per game), also leads the offense. Patterson leads Pacific in attack percentage (.251). Hanne De scrjver orchestrates the offense with 216 assists while Alex Holt (21 blocks) and Lauren Cline (16) leads the defense.
San Jose State (1-2) boasts five players with at least 15 kills, including Haylee Nelson (23 kills), who leads the club at 3.29 kills per set and a .450 attack percentage.
Northern Colorado's (2-4) Kortney Lockey (82 kills) and Lauren Hinrichs (62 kills) are the key cogs in the Northern Colorado offense. Hinrichs is hitting .377 across 122 total attacks. Daisy Schultz (239 assists), Taylor Els (112 digs), and Taylor Muff (10 service aces) are all key contributors.
