@BamaStateTennis wins season opener over Point

Lady Hornets sweep Point in singles and doubles, yield just 18 total points

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State breezed to a 7-0 victory over Point in non-conference play at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center to open the 2019 season.

Alabama State (1-0), the two-time defending Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) champion, yielded just 18 total points en route to sweeping the match. The Lady Hornets allowed just three points in doubles play, and shutout their opponents in two of the singles matches.

INSIDE DOUBLES PLAY
Alabama State played just two doubles matches due to a default at number three by Point, and needed just one win to take the point.

The Lady Hornets picked up the win, and the point, at number one doubles with the team of Reka Szentes and Urska Velec picking up a 6-1 victory. They swept doubles play with a win at number two doubles 6-2 behind Lea Krajcovicova and Gabriela Lackova.

The win by Velec was her first career victory for the Lady Hornets.

INSIDE SINGLES PLAY
Alabama State swept through singles play, leading 2-0 before taking the court. The Lady Hornets picked up wins at numbers one through five.

Velec finished off her perfect day at number one singles with 6-3, 6-1 victory; while Maria Popova picked up her first career win at number three singles with a 7-6, 6-1 win. Meanwhile, Marija Blazevic picked up her first singles win of the year with a 6-0, 6-4 victory at number four singles.

Krajcovicova (number two singles) and Worthy Goldman (number five singles) were perfect on the day in singles play with 6-0, 6-0 victories.

UP NEXT
Alabama State will make up their match with West Alabama at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center January 31, with the match slated to start at 2 pm.
