LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. | The final day of the Grizzly Open, hosted by Georgia Gwinnett, was rained out Sunday on the final day but not before Alabama State won several matches on the first two days of the tournament.
Madalena Andrade breezed into the semifinals of Flight A singles without dropping a set in her first three matches, including dropping just 10 points in those matches. She recorded straight set victories over Rory Church (6-1, 6-0), Steffi McDonald (6-2, 6-1) and Yalyzaveta Velykorodna (6-4, 6-2); before falling in the semifinals to Mara Genovese 6-2, 6-0.
She also reached the quarterfinals in doubles action with playing partner
Maria Popova.
Meanwhile, in Flight B,
Salome Sposetti also reached the semifinals following a pair of wins in the opening rounds. After receiving a bye in the opening round, she defeated Hayden Rainwater (6-2, 6-1) before facing teammate
Victoria Cabral. She won that battle 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-3) before her match with Julia Ramos was scheduled for Sunday.
Cabral, although falling to Sposetti in the quarterfinals, picked up a pair of wins in the early rounds of Flight B over Sofia Guaglianone (6-0, 6-4) and Sydney Dattilo (6-3, 6-0).
Several players reached the second round in Flight A including
Marija Blazevic with a win over Camile Portalier (7-5, 7-5),
Bea Acena with a win over Zyanya Rogel (6-2, 6-1) and
Urska Velec with a win over Debora Scurt (6-1, 7-6).
