TUSCALOOSA, Ala. | Alabama State recorded several wins on the opening day of the Roberta Allison Fall Classic, hosted by Alabama Friday.
Madalena Andrade won a pair of matches in the Titia Wilmink Singles Draw, reaching the finals set for Saturday. She needed three sets in each of her matches in order to advance, defeating Josephine Cao of Memphis 6-7(3), 6-3, 7-6(2) in the opening round; before advancing to the finals with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Shevita Aulana of Troy.
Meanwhile,
Urska Velec picked up a win over Hannah Davies of Memphis 6-4, 7-5 in the Heather Geros Singles Draw, before falling to Taylor Dean of Kennesaw State 6-1, 6-4 to fall into the consolation finals.
Bea Acena fell in the quarterfinals of the Jean Mills Singles Draw after receiving a bye in the opening round. She fell to Tijana Svitlica of Troy 6-3, 6-4 and dropped to the consolation final against Jarrett Aspen of Kennesaw State on Saturday. Meanwhile,
Maria Popova dropped a pair of matches in the Mari Muller Singles Draw.
The doubles teams' of Velec/Acena (Hilde Otterman Doubles Draw) and Popova/Andrade (Natalie McElveen Doubles Draw) both picked up wins and advanced in the winners' brackets.
The tournament continues Saturday in Tuscaloosa.
