Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Aniyah Smith Leads @BamaStateWBB Past Mobile

Montgomery, Ala. – Freshman Aniyah Smith recorded her first career double double helping Alabama State take down Mobile, 76-66 in non-conference women's basketball action inside of the Dunn-Oliver Acadome on Saturday evening.

The Lady Hornets (1-1) nearly shot 50 percent on the night with a 49.1 clip (27-of-55) while also dropping 20 free throws (74.1 percent) to earn the win in the home opener.

Smith finished with a team-high 19 points on 7-of-11 from the field and a perfect 5-of-5 from the charity stripe with a game-high 11 rebounds alongside game-high tying two assists and a pair of steals.

Three other Lady Hornets joined Smith in double figures as senior Zomoria Clark and sophomores Jayla Crawford and Ayana Emmanuel added 14, 16 and 12, respectively. Clark finished shooting 70 percent (7-of-10) from the field with six boards and a game-high three blocks.

Alabama State struggled to get into an offensive rhythm to start the game but soon settled down and stepped up on defense to grab four steals allowing the Lady Hornets to take a one-point lead (19-18) at the end of the first.

In the second, Alabama State was nearly unstoppable offensively as the team shot 7-of-10 (70 percent) from the field that gave the Lady Hornets enough momentum to take a 38-34 lead into the break that it would not relinquish.
