TAMPA, Fla. | A hot-shooting South Florida team proved to be too much for Alabama State on the road Friday night with the Lady Hornets falling 80-29 in non-conference action at the Yuengling Center.
Alabama State fell behind early by double digits in the opening quarter before they were able to close to within eight at 16-8 on a
Zomoria Clark layup with just under two minutes remaining in the quarter. The Lady Hornets continued their run into the second quarter using a basket by
Armani Smith and a three-pointer from
Jayla Crawford to pull within five at 24-19.
They were able to keep it within six until South Florida was able to open a 14-point lead at the intermission and took control from there.
Hannah White led Alabama State (3-4) with six points, while a trio of players –
Aniyah Smith, Crawford and
Tyesha Rudolph each ended the contest with five points; while Smith grabbed a team-high eight rebounds in the loss. The Lady Hornets finished the night shooting 16.9 (10-of-59) percent from the floor and 20.0 (3-of-15) percent shooting from beyond the arc. They also finished at 50.0 (6-of-12) percent from the free throw line.
Meanwhile, South Florida (6-4) was led by Maria Alvarez with 18 points off the bench, while Kristyna Brabencova added 16. Elena Tsineke chipped in with 15, while Tamara Henshaw added a game-high 15 rebounds. The Bulls shot 48.4 (31-of-64) percent from the floor and 45.9 (17-of-37) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot just 20.0 (1-of-5) percent from the free throw line.
Alabama State returns to action on the road Thursday at Wisconsin, with tip set for 7 pm.
