@BamaStateSB drops two games Sunday

Lady Hornets play Mississippi State on Wednesday

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State fought valiantly in the final inning against Purdue Fort Wayne before ultimately dropping the game, 9-6, in a continuation of a game from Friday that was halted due to weather.

The Lady Hornets made a push in the bottom of the seventh, bringing the game-winning run to the plate before the the Mastodons (4-6) induced a force out at third base to escape the bases-loaded jam. Senior Kristin Gunter was the only Alabama State player with multiple hits, finishing the game 2-for-4 with one double.

Alabama State (5-3) fell victim to the Skyhawks after committing four untimely errors that eventually led to five unearned runs. Junior Alexis Sydnor was the lone bright spot offensively, accounting for two of the Lady Hornets' five hits. The junior had multiple hits in all three games she started this weekend. Alabama State lost a prime opportunity in the fifth inning after Alexis Massie and Jordan Amerson reached via an error and single, respectively. Senior Casey Durham placed a sacrifice bunt perfectly down the first base line and was called out despite the Skyhawks' first baseman losing her glove on the play. Alabama State was unable to take advantage of the runners in scoring position and would go quietly in the seventh to close out the contest.

What's Next
Alabama State will tackle its first midweek contest of the season when the Lady Hornets travel to Starkville, Miss. to play Mississippi State on Wednesday night at 5:30 pm.
