MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Alabama State tennis programs dropped their first matches of the season at home, falling to West Alabama at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center Monday afternoon.
The Alabama State (1-2) women dropped a 6-1 decision to West Alabama, while the Alabama State (1-6) men dropped a 4-3 decision to the Tigers despite winning three singles matches.
Inside the Women's Match
West Alabama picked up the doubles point with wins at number one and number two doubles – including a sweep at number one by the team of Georgina Salom and Andrea Tommassone over Alabama State's
Worthy Goldman and
Chloe Kabamba (6-0).
The number three team of
Gabriela Lackova and
Lea Krajcovicova picked up a win at number three doubles with a 6-4 win over Liliana Araucz and Daryna Hukasian.
The Lady Hornets picked up singles victory at number two when
Reka Szentes picked up a 5-7, 7-6, 10-6 victory over Sarah Manseri of West Alabama.
Three of the matches on the day went three sets, including a pair of wins by West Alabama at number three where Haina Franco defeated Krajcovicova 3-6, 6-1, 12-10. The other three set win by West Alabama came at number six singles where Araucz defeated Goldman of Alabama State 7-6, 5-7, 10-7.
Inside the Men's Match
West Alabama won the doubles point with convincing wins at numbers two and three, including a 6-4 win at number two over
Tomas Fernandez and
Carl-Louis Luckmann.
Meanwhile, the number one doubles team of
Ion Efrim and
Alexis Collard picked up a hard-fought 7-5 win after picking up a break point over West Alabama's Linus Holthey and Juilus Kaverinen.
In singles play, Alabama State picked up a pair of singles victories in the middle of the lineup, including a second consecutive victory by
Alexis Collard in the last two days. Collard picked up a 2-6, 6-0, 6-3 victory over Holthey at number three singles.
Meanwhile,
Tomas Fernandez got back in the win column with a hard-fought 7-5, 6-7, 10-6 victory over Erik Nordblom at number four singles.
Ion Efrim picked up his first win at number on singles on the season, with a straight-set 6-2, 6-2 victory over Kaverinen – one of only two straight set decisions in singles play.
Two of West Alabama's wins in singles play came in three sets including at number two where Ilia Dehodiuk defeated
Carl-Louis Luckmann 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. Meanwhile, Henrik Sinkko defeated
Alejo Calvis 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 at number six singles.
What's Next
The Alabama State women take on Mississippi State on the road February 9, playing a pair of matches in Starkville.
Meanwhile, both teams return home February 10 to host North Alabama beginning at 1:30 pm.
