ZACHARY, La. | Alabama State used an explosion of early runs and another solid pitching performance en route to a 10-1 win against Howard on the second day of the Chef Celeste Softball Challenge.
Charlene Castro laced a two-run single in the first inning to open the scoring and Alabama State (2-0) took advantage of three walks and a wild pitch to extend the lead out to 5-0 by the end of the opening frame.
The Lady Hornets padded their lead in the second inning when
Amira James blasted a two-run triple over the center-fielders' outstretched arms for her second hit of 2019.
Junior
Alexis Sydnor helped continue the onslaught for Alabama State when the Opelika, Ala. native laced an RBI single for her first career hit as a Lady Hornet. She would eventually come around to score on a wild pitch.
Noteworthy
- Junior Justine Jean (1-0) gave Alabama State another solid pitching performance, scattering nine hits with four strikeouts across a complete-game six innings.
- Kristin Gunter led Alabama State with two hits and has now reached base five times through two games.
- Aimee Felices and Kaylee Davis each collected their first hit of the season.

- Alabama State will play a doubleheader Sunday, beginning with Prairie View A&M (9 am) before closing out the tournament with Southern at 12 pm.
